Leaving the reserve, we headed into the National
Park itself and our first night at one of the rest camps. Fabulous
view over the Olifants River about 100m below us – plenty of water
after the heavy rain that they have had here. It was 32C when we
arrived, so the aircon was welcome, and also the chance to catch up
on laundry etc. After Three days of 5.00am game drive starts, we were
both ready for an early night and a long sleep which was only
interrupted by torrential rain in the early hours.
At daylight, the river appeared to be at least a
foot or two higher than the night before and the noise of the rapids
was almost deafening.
It was dry by breakfast time and very pleasant to
relax on the deck without any plans. The afternoon bush walk was
cancelled because part of the trail had been washed out overnight, so
we headed off in the car for a bit of bird-watching.
Saw a few new
species but were diverted from our route twice by closed roads, so we
headed home as the heavens opened only to meet a Bull Elephant in the
middle of the road. We stopped about 150m from him but this was
apparently too close as he headed in our direction. Had reversed 500m
before he lost interest and went back to browsing on the trees along
the verge. Eventually saw him wander off the road and made it safely
back to camp.
